Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of Infosys, is a name synonymous with innovation, ethics, and leadership in the Indian IT sector. Often referred to as the "Father of the Indian IT Industry," Murthy's journey from a humble middle-class background to becoming a global business icon is a story of grit, vision, and unwavering commitment to values. His efforts have not only shaped Infosys into a multinational giant but also inspired generations of entrepreneurs and leaders worldwide.
Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy was born on August 20, 1946, in Sidlaghatta, a small town in Karnataka, India. Coming from a middle-class family, his father, a schoolteacher, instilled in him the values of discipline and hard work. Murthy showed an early aptitude for academics, excelling in mathematics and science.
Murthy earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the National Institute of Engineering, University of Mysore, in 1967. Later, he pursued a master’s degree in technology (MTech) from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, in 1969. During his time at IIT, Murthy's analytical thinking and problem-solving skills blossomed, setting the foundation for his illustrious career.
After completing his education, Murthy began his career at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad as the chief systems programmer. Here, he worked on developing India's first time-sharing computer system. Later, he ventured abroad and worked in Paris, where he was exposed to global technologies and ideologies.
However, Murthy’s entrepreneurial journey began with a setback. In 1976, he started Softronics, which aimed to bring computer services to businesses in India. Unfortunately, the venture failed, teaching Murthy valuable lessons about perseverance and adaptability.
In 1981, Murthy co-founded Infosys in Pune, along with six other engineers: Nandan Nilekani, S. Gopalakrishnan, S. D. Shibulal, K. Dinesh, N. S. Raghavan, and Ashok Arora. With an initial investment of ₹10,000 borrowed from his wife Sudha Murthy, Infosys began as a small software development company.
Murthy envisioned Infosys as a global leader in IT services, emphasizing innovation, quality, and customer-centric solutions. Under his leadership, Infosys pioneered several industry-first practices, including transparent governance, employee stock options, and offshore outsourcing.
Under Murthy’s leadership, Infosys expanded globally, establishing offices in North America, Europe, and Asia. The company became synonymous with high-quality IT services, including software development, consulting, and business process outsourcing.
In 1993, Infosys became the first Indian company to be listed on NASDAQ.
Infosys achieved $1 billion in revenue in 2004, becoming one of India’s fastest-growing IT firms.
By the time Murthy retired as CEO in 2002, Infosys had grown into a multinational corporation with a strong presence in over 30 countries.
Narayana Murthy and his wife, Sudha Murthy, are renowned philanthropists. Their charitable initiatives span education, healthcare, rural development, and arts. The Infosys Foundation, established in 1996, has undertaken numerous projects to improve the lives of underprivileged communities in India.
Murthy’s contributions to the IT industry and society have earned him numerous accolades:
Padma Vibhushan (2008) and Padma Shri (2000), are two of India’s highest civilian honors.
Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year (2003).
Recognized as one of the "12 Greatest Entrepreneurs of Our Time" by Fortune magazine in 2012.
Honored by prestigious universities such as Harvard, Stanford, and Yale with honorary doctorates.
Murthy stepped down from his executive roles at Infosys in 2011 but returned briefly as executive chairman in 2013 to steer the company through a challenging phase. Today, he serves as an advisor and mentor to emerging entrepreneurs and leaders.
